A Reminder about Referral Protocols

  • For emergency referrals: please first call eye casualty to discuss your findings and make an appointment before sending the patient with a letter (please see below for more information).
  • For urgent referrals (including wet AMD): please contact the hospital a few days later to confirm they have received the referral.
  • As with all referrals (urgent or routine), please ask the patient to inform you if they haven’t been contacted within the specified timeframe.

NORFOLK & NORWICH UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL (NNUH)

BEFORE SENDING THE REFERRAL, please call the hospital’s Ophthalmic Emergency Referral Service (OERS) on Tel: 01603 287787.

OERS opening times: 9.00am and 4.30pm (Monday to Saturday) 9.00am and 12.30pm (Sunday).

NB If you are unable to get through OERS by telephone, then call the hospital’s main switchboard on Tel: 01603 286286 and ask to speak to the on-call ophthalmologist who will be able to advise.

JAMES PAGET HOSPITAL

BEFORE SENDING THE REFERRAL, please call 01493 45 24 52 and ask to speak to eye casualty on weekdays between 08:30 – 17:30 and out of hours referrals are taken via switchboard to the Ophthalmology on call hospital service.
 
If you unable to get hold of anyone on the phone, the hospitals have confirmed as an absolute last resort is giving the patient the letter and asking them to attend eye casualty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL KINGS LYNN (QEHKL)

BEFORE SENDING THE REFERRAL:

1. Weekdays (09:00-17:00)
   – Call the hospital switchboard 01553 613613
   – Contact the casualty bleep holder (bleep 3073).
 
2. Out of Hours:
   – Referrals discussed directly with the on call ophthalmology doctor via                   switchboard (01553 613613)
   – All referrals must be discussed with the Ophthalmology on-call Doctor.
   
3. Failsafe:
   – In the event the bleepholder cannot be contacted, the email:  Eye.Casualty@qehkl.nhs.uk – to be used as a failsafe only
   – This is only for weekdays (09:00-17:00) when bleep holder is unreachable.
   – This email inbox is not checked on weekends.
Once you have spoken to the casualty bleep holder or on call Ophthalmologist, please complete the referral  then email it to the emergency email address: Eye.Casualty@qehkl.nhs.uk, as this ensures efficient communication and timely responses with the patient at the point of referral.
